Homemade Bath Fizzies

By Sara L Kunkel, Publisher/Editor March 22, 2017

My son and I have a newfound affinity for bath bombs or bath fizzies. He loves the ones with the cool little plastic animals hidden inside; I prefer the more luxurious kind (but surprises on the inside are fun too, I can't lie).   They are, however, very hard to find and can be very expensive! This weekend we tried our hand at making our own, and they came out pretty cool! We will definitely be making them again soon using new colors, scents & some fun things hidden inside!

MATERIALS:
DRY

  • 2 c baking soda
  • 1 c. cream of tartar
  • 1/2 c epsom salts (we used lavender-scented)

    WET
  • 2 tbsp oil (we used coconut)
  • 1/2 tsp essential oil (we used vanilla. make sure they are kid-safe)
  • 3/4 tbsp water

    OTHER:
  • food coloring
  • small toys or prizes to hide inside.  (we used sprinkles in a couple of them)
  • plastic fillable ornament
  • small bowls
  • 1 large bowl
  • spoon

DIRECTIONS:
1.  Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk together.
2.  Combine all wet ingredients in small bowl.
3.  Add wet ingredients slowly to dry ingredients in large bowl, mixing with your hands to combine completely. Texture should be similar to kinetic sand and form clumps easily when pressed.
4.  Divide into desired amount of small bowls. Tint with food coloring.
5.  Using a spoon, scoop your favorite colors or designs into both halves of the plastic ornament mold. If putting something inside, press toy or object gently into one half.
6.  Press together both sides of ornament until a ball is formed. Release gently.
7.  Smooth seams with your fingers.
8.  Set in a dry place for 24-48 hours until thoroughly dried out.
9.  Draw a warm bath & drop 1 bath fizzy into the water with you.
10.  Enjoy skin softening, comforting scent & fun fizzing action.
